How the Club Works RRRC is a tax-exempt non-profit organization. We obtain our exempt status from our parent organization, the Road Runners Club of America. We are a large club, catering to all running levels, offering training, road races and race timing services. Currently our membership is about 2000. Volunteers run the club. We raise money through our dues and by providing race services. Our major costs are the newsletter, insurance, and club race expenses. Every single activity is organized and managed by volunteers – people who work, have families and don’t spend the whole day in running shoes (ok, some do…).

Why do our members volunteer? They are passionate about running. They want to give something back to a club that has offered them a lot. They want to help others to enjoy running as much as they do.
But what can you do? There are a lot of opportunities for you to get involved. You don’t need any specific skills or background – just come along and join the others. Here are some of our volunteer jobs:
§Marshalling (giving directions to runners, handing out water etc. at club races)
§Finish Line (helping time runners at club events and contract races)
§Registration (helping process registration forms and hand out bib numbers before club races)
§Summer Track Series: The club organizes a summer track series every Wednesday night at the Sports Backers Stadium off of Boulevard. We need help starting and timing each event.
§Group Runs: If you have a group run that meets at a set time, we would like to advertise the event so that others can attend.
§Leading the Beginners Group at club runs (Sat. morning at Byrd Park): Make sure that nobody gets lost, motivate beginners, and advise on running related questions.
§Writing for the Miles & Minutes Articles and other contributions are always welcome.
§Organizing social events such as the Grand Prix Banquet, Summer party runs, Bar Social hours. So please, give it a try – volunteering once a year or leading a pace group while you run should be manageable tasks for most of us.

Meetings Club meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month. The meetings start at 6 pm and usually end at about 7:30. Meetings are held in the second floor conference room of the Sports Backers Stadium off of Boulevard behind the Diamond stadium. The meetings have a standard format and review the business of the club. There is a review of the minutes of the previous meeting, the treasurer’s report, newsletter report, membership report, race report and old and new business. Usually snacks are served. All are welcome to attend. This is a great chance to see the club leaders in action and also to find out what is going on. As a member, you do not have to attend meetings!

Volunteering Volunteering is easy. You don’t need to worry about what needs to be done, just show up at a club event, find the race director or the RRRC truck and ask what needs to be done. Someone will show you how you can help. Major items are helping with water stops, race registration and the finish line timing. You get grand prix points for volunteering at club and contract races. Be sure to sign-in on the list in the RRRC truck.

Scholarship Each year the club offers at least one one-thousand dollar ($1000) scholarship award to a college/university-bound graduating high school senior. The scholarship information and application can be downloaded. The scholarship award is based on the student’s commitment to running, their academic performance and their references. A scholarship committee evaluates each application and the awards are made by June 1. The scholarship is made payable to the student’s school and is to be used for admission and/or fees. Preference is given to club members.

Miles and Minutes The club publishes a monthly newsletter, Miles & Minutes. The newsletter is published on the first of each month. It lists health and fitness articles, information about upcoming races, and personal interest articles by and about club members. The club accepts advertising for the newsletter and sponsorship of events. Deadline for submission of articles, advertising or race entry forms is the 10th of the month. Miles & Minutes is mailed by bulk mail (allow 3-7 days to reach local addresses). Instead of bulk mail you can elect to receive the newsletter electronically as a downloadable pdf file. If you don’t have a pdf reader on your computer, you can download one free at www.adobe.com. You will save the club the time and expense of mailing you the newsletter and you will also get the newsletter about 2 weeks earlier than by snail mail. Miles & Minutes has a distribution of about 1500 copies per month! Our membership is select group of individuals who really want to hear about your product. Advertise your business, product, service, or upcoming race in Miles & Minutes. As a non-profit, we limit our advertising to items related to running or of interest to runners. Our rates are very inexpensive. Contact our editor for more information.
